Garden Surprises

Earlier this spring I planted a bed of bulbs. I got gladiolas, agapanthus, and daylilies. The gladiolas shot up right away, they have yet to bloom, but they are at least up. As for the agapanthus I only planted six bulbs and truthfully I didn't have much hope for them. Now the daylilies... I planted a decent amount of daylilies and when plants that weren't the gladiolas began to grow in the bed sure enough, I thought they were daylilies. Sure the leaves weren't long but maybe I reasoned with myself this was some rare for of daylily that surely was just putting out some initial "tester" leaves that would give way to classic long lily leaves.

We'll this weekend I just couldn't reason it away anymore. I sent a picture to my dad and sure enough he said he didn't think they were daylilies. Here's the conversation:

L: So Dad, did you get a chance to look at those pictures I sent you?

D: Yep

L: Uh, okay, what do you think they are?

D: Well they aren't lilies of anykind, looking at them they look to me like pumpkin, yeah a squash of some sort

L: No, no way, I planted only bulbs there, thats crazy...wait...

And that's when I realized the compost I used in the bed must have had pumpkin and squash seeds from last fall.. I think the whole thing is just so funny! So it turns out I'm only going to have about four lilies, but squash, yeah I'm going to have a ton of it. Coworkers, neighbors, and house guests watch out... we are about to have an all squash, all the time season!
